What besides academic excellence creates a balanced education? What is the value of character education or the training of heart? What's important for our children to learn and why?

Just as that other post about Balanced Education described, character is often more important than academic excellence -- although we need both. What worries me is the way so many academic institutions value knowledge and yet don't support it with promoting good character. What good is an education if a person is just plain selfish? An the other hand, imagine what a good person could do with a good education. The sky is the limit.
